Personal Development and Wellbeing at Tintagel Primary School

At Tintagel Primary School, we believe that education is about far more than academic achievement. We are committed to developing confident, resilient and compassionate young people who are ready to contribute positively to their communities and the wider world.

Personal development lies at the heart of school life. Through our curriculum, school values, enrichment opportunities and daily interactions, we help children develop the knowledge, skills and qualities needed to thrive both now and in the future.

We want every child to feel safe, valued and included. By fostering a strong sense of belonging and celebrating individuality, we support children in developing confidence, self-worth and respect for others. We encourage pupils to become active members of their communities, make informed choices and understand the importance of kindness, responsibility and integrity.

Through meaningful experiences and opportunities for leadership, service, participation and reflection, children develop the character and confidence needed to navigate an ever-changing world.

Our Aims

Through our approach to personal development, we aim for all pupils to:

  • Develop confidence, resilience and positive self-esteem.
  • Understand how to maintain their physical, emotional and mental wellbeing.
  • Build healthy, respectful relationships and friendships.
  • Celebrate diversity and understand the importance of equality, inclusion and belonging.
  • Develop empathy, kindness and respect for others.
  • Understand their rights and responsibilities as members of society.
  • Become active, responsible and informed citizens.
  • Develop aspirations for their future and understand how to achieve their goals.
  • Learn how to stay safe, including online.
  • Recognise the importance of contributing positively to their school, community and wider society.

SMSC and British Values

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development is woven throughout school life and underpins our curriculum and ethos.

We provide opportunities for children to:

  • Explore beliefs, values and ideas.
  • Reflect on their own experiences and aspirations.
  • Understand right and wrong and make responsible choices.
  • Appreciate different viewpoints and cultures.
  • Participate positively within their local community.
  • Develop an understanding of democracy, individual liberty, mutual respect and the rule of law.

Through these experiences, children develop a deeper understanding of themselves, others and the diverse society in which they live.

Wellbeing and Mental Health

We recognise that emotional wellbeing is fundamental to successful learning. Through our nurturing and inclusive approach, children are supported to understand and manage their emotions, seek help when needed and develop strategies for maintaining positive mental health.

Our staff work closely with families and external agencies where appropriate to ensure that every child feels supported, valued and able to flourish.
