Tintagel Primary School

English - Handwriting

Handwriting:

At Tintagel, we believe that confident, fluent handwriting begins with strong physical foundations. From the earliest stages in our Nursery, children develop the strength, coordination and control needed for writing through purposeful movement, gross motor and fine motor experiences.

When children are developmentally ready to begin writing, they are explicitly taught how to hold and control a pencil and form letters correctly. We use the Morrells Handwriting Scheme to provide a clear and consistent approach, helping children to develop accurate letter formation and secure these important transcription skills so that they become increasingly automatic.

Handwriting continues to be taught explicitly as children move through the school. Children develop greater control, consistency and fluency, progressing towards joined handwriting when they are developmentally ready.

Aims:

Our aim is for every child to develop efficient, fluent and increasingly automatic handwriting, freeing them to concentrate on the content, vocabulary and composition of their writing. Capital and lower case letters should be used appropriately and letter size should be consistent.
