At Tintagel Primary School, our Early Years Foundation Stage starts in our Nursery Classroom, Saplings, at 2 years old. The children continue their EYFS learning journey all the way through to their Reception year, in Sycamore Class. We work hard to support children with developing their independence and confidence in themselves as learners. We believe in sharing meaningful learning experiences with children that allow them to build an intrinsic desire to learn and develop a wide range of skills, using both the indoor and outdoor classrooms. We provide them with a safe, secure and supportive environment that allows them to reach their full potential.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework in the UK sets standards for the learning, development, and care of children from birth to five years old. It comprises seven key areas of learning, divided into prime and specific areas:
Prime Areas (Fundamental for development and future learning)
- Communication and Language β Developing listening, attention, understanding, and expressive language skills.
- Physical Development β Enhancing gross and fine motor skills, coordination, control, and health awareness.
- Personal, Social, and Emotional Development β Building self-confidence, relationships, emotional regulation, and social skills.
Specific Areas (Supporting subject-specific knowledge and skills)
- Literacy β Encouraging reading comprehension, phonics, and early writing skills.
- Mathematics β Developing an understanding of numbers, counting, patterns, shapes, and measurements.
- Understanding the World β Exploring people, cultures, communities, nature, and technology.
- Expressive Arts and Design β Fostering creativity through art, music, movement, role-play, and imaginative activities.
These areas ensure a balanced foundation for children's holistic development and future learning.
